Valluvar Kottam

Valluvar KottamLocated on the corner of Kodambakkam High Road and Village Road is Valluvar Kottam- a memorial built in honor of the Tamil poet-saint. Thiruvalluvar, who wrote the sacred "Tirukkural". Reputed to be about 2000 years old, the book is highly valued for its ethical content and is regarded as the purest expression of human thought. Established in 1976, Valluvar Kottam is designed like a chariot, on the lines of the temple car of Thiruvarur. It replicates ancient Tamil architecture with the 1333 verse Kurals (couplet) inscribed on its granite bases and on the corridors of its auditorium. The memorial's auditorium constructed on reclaimed land from an unused lake and built with grid-type roofing to eliminate pillar support can seat up to 4000 people. Valluvar Kottam opens daily from 8 am to 6 pm. It is closed on Fridays and National holidays.
