St. Thomas Cathedral Church

An important pilgrimage site for the Christians, the SanThome Basilica Cathedral, built in the memory of Saint Thomas is located at the end of Kutchery Road in Mylapore was first built by the Portuguese in 1504. It was later re-built as a Cathedral in 1890 and in 1896 it was made into a basilica. Built over the tomb of St. Thomas, the Cathedral is in the neo-Gothic style and contains beautiful stained glass windows depicting the story of St Thomas. There are also some wooden plaques that depict scenes from the last days of Christ as well as a 3ft. high statue of Virgin Mary, which is believed to have been brought from Portugal in 1543. The Cathedral also has in its possession a small hand bone of Thomas and the head of a lance, with which he was killed.
