The Marina Beach

One of most lovely beaches in the country the Marina beach holds the distinction of being the second largest beach in the world. Its coastline extends all the way from fort St George to Mahabalipuram, approximately 13 km in length. It is one of the most sought after location for tourist from all over the country and the world due to its moderate climate, soft sand, shimmering sun and vast sea. The beauty of sunrise and sun set is splendid sight to watch from the beach. The present beauty of the marina beach is the result of a facelift given by governor Grant Druff in 1884, which also gave it its present name.

The beach is located in the eastern side of the city, adjoining the Bay of Bengal. Beautiful and well-maintained gardens add to its charming beauty. It is a perfect place for family outing and unwinding oneself after a hectic day of sightseeing in the city. One can find all sources of leisure at the beach like food stalls; fishing, pony or horse rides for children. Lantern-lit shops selling trinkets, shells and fast food becomes common in the evenings.

Due to its violent currents swimming is not recommended here though many brave swimmers can be found enjoying swimming. The beach is also used for major state functions.

Attractions around the beach

There are other good attractions near the beach. The road near the beach has some the very beautiful buildings in Chennai, like the skyline Senate house, University of Madras, Chepauk Palace, Residency College, Ice House and PWD office. On the other side of the road are lined a series of statues. Statues of some of the prominent figures of the country and the state like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose. The most impressive of these is the Triumph of labor by Debiprasad Roy Choudhary.it also has the memorials of Annadurai and MG Ramachandran, two of the most popular leaders of the state politics. New lighthouses can be seen at the end of the beach.

Aquarium

Close to the marina beach is an aquarium, which has good collection of exotic fishes, enabling one to have a closer look at the aquatic life in the sea.

Ice House

Famous for keeping ice brought from great lakes in North America during the British period is located to the south of the aquarium.
