Kalakshetra

Kalakshetra or the 'Temple of Art',Kalakshetra or the 'Temple of Art', located around 1 km from the Theosophical Society, was founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale in 1936 for the revival of Indian classical arts and crafts traditions. One of the finest of its kind, students from around the world are trained under the residential Gurukul system. Set in sylvan surroundings on the outskirts of Chennai, in Tiruvanmiyur, the institution showcases various aspects of South Indian culture during the annual month long Dance and Music festival held at Chennai from mid - December to mid - January. Besides, classical dance and music, the institute also conducts research into works of several renowned Sanskrit scholars to stage dance and theatre productions. Traditional textile designs and weaving are also taught are at the institution which provides a good source of income and livelihood to destitute women coming from poorer sections of the community.
