For people in general and students and lovers of astronomy in particular the Birla Planetarium remains an unforgettable and wonderful place to be in if one is visiting Chennai. Built in the memory of Sri B.M.Birla, the eminent industrialist and visionary, it is the most modern planetarium in the country. Situated in Kotturpura, near Adyar, it forms a part of the Periyar Science and Technology Museum. With the help of one of the most sophisticated and versatile GM II projector it is able to bring to life the night sky and the celestial phenomena. The spectacular show begins by taking you to the journey of the universe which includes showing twinkling stars, meteoroids, planets, contours of them etc on the specially perforated inner dome of the planetarium.This centrally air-conditioned complex also houses a sound studio, classroom and seminar hall. It has a sitting capacity of 236 at a given time and with the help of both audio and visual effects the mysteries of the solar system are unfolded.
The science park in the center provides the opportunity to learn more about science through new and innovative methods like interactive exhibits. It also has an impressive Traffic Park that keeps people abreast of the latest road safety measures. Children going there can enjoy the trip by playing around in toy cars with the help of automatic electronic signal systems.
Time to time workshops and discussions are organized involving eminent professionals, which draws large number of people.
The Science and Technology Centre are open on all days except on national holidays, from 10 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. Timings for cosmic shows in the planetarium (English) are 10.45 a.m., 1.15 p.m. and 3.45 p.m. In Tamil, the show timings are 12 noon and 2.30 p.m.
